Project 4: Replication & Display (due 11/30)








For this project, think of two objects that have some relation to each other, either in form or in function. There are specific parameters for the objects, as you will be replicating them in slip (clay) through a mold making process. We will discuss the parameters (size, details, undercuts) in class. For the final piece, you should have a minimum of 8 of your objects (could be 4 and 4, or 7 of one and 1 of the other). The display mechanism (shelf, pedestal, etc.) is up to you and should be considered as part of the piece--as important and deliberate as the objects you will cast. 

You will learn a mold making process for this project. Bring 2 objects to class on the 9th that you would like to replicate. We will make 1 and 2-part plaster molds, as needed, and replicate the objects by slip casting them. Both objects should be around 6" high. You can make these objects from clay or use pre-existing objects.

Metal Sculpture Schedule (crit 11/2)












Make a piece primarily out of metal, get comfortable with the tools we have in the shop. Your piece will depend on what you do with the metal from our field trip to the scrap yard.

Conjoined Structures (critique date 10/5)










Conjoined Structures
Construct two interdependent structures, neither of which can stand without the support of the other. Consider them drawings in space. Together they should occupy approximately the same volume as your body. Get to know all of the tools in the wood shop, be precise with your angles and joints, create two individual volumes with contrasting formal characteristics (line, shape, texture). 
  
You will have to purchase wood for your project. Visit Shell Lumber on SW 27th Ave & US1, they have a large selection of different kinds of wood. Come to class with all of your materials on the 21st.

Sculpture Tech's Shop Hours

Dacil, the tech in the sculpture area, is there nights a week from 4:30pm-12:30am. She either works Monday, Tuesday and Thursday or Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. She posts her hours on the door 2 weeks in advance (usually on Thursday nights) so stay up to date.

Students who arrive after 10 PM will not be allowed in the building, according to MDC rules. If you arrive earlier, you may stay until Dacil's shift is over. She is an excellent fabricator. If you aren't sure which tool is right for the job or you need advice on how to make something just ask her. And please remember, 3D work takes a LOT OF TIME. Go to the studio early in her shift so you don't have to leave before you accomplished what you want, especially before critiques. She is there a total of 24 hours per week, take advantage of that studio time to do your work---don't wait until the last minute.

Student Presentation Guidelines

Each week the class will be assigned to read an interview or article about an artist from the list below. In addition, one student will become and expert on the artist of the week, and give a 15 minute presentation about the artist's work to the class. The presentation should consist of a short biography, an in-depth discussion of the artist's work including the artist's peers and influences, and discussion of at least three key artworks by the artist. You must present at least ten images, and your research must be original (not copied from Wikipedia, etc.) Presentations will begin the third week of class. Select an artist from the list below, and write both your name and the artist's name in the comments section of this post to claim an artist. Each student must claim an artist by Week 2. Bring your images on a USB stick as JPEGS in numerical order.

You will be required to hand in a printed Works Cited sheet. Cite every book, article, video, etc. that contributed to your research. Here are the MLA standards for Works Cited.

Textile (Self Portrait) due 9/14









Objective: Make a self-representative sculpture at least the size (length, width, height) of your body using textile-based materials. At the end of this project you should be comfortable using the sewing machine.

  • The project can be constructed by machine or by hand but not with staples or glue. 
  • An assortment of fabrics will be provided, but students may use other materials as necessary
  • The project is a self-portrait in the broadest sense, meaning that it should represent some aspect of your self or your experience. It may be process-based or representational or both. 
  • You may paint or otherwise apply any finish necessary to your project after it is constructed. 
  • The piece may be wearable.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
In order to maximize your learning experience, the faculty and Dean have endorsed a divisional attendance policy.  The attendance requirements are as follows:

1. The attendance policy permits two [2] absences per class per term, when classes meet twice a week, and one [1] absence per class per term, when classes meet once a week.  Each additional absence will lower your final grades one letter.

2. Tardies exceeding ten [10] minutes will be considered a full absence for the day.

3. Absences due to serious circumstances [i.e. hospital stay, death in the family] must be legitimately documented and approved by the Dean. It is the student’s responsibility to see his/her professor to make up any requested work due to an absence. It is also the student’s responsibility to make sure that the instructor documents your attendance if you arrive within a 10 minutes time frame.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Art 2701C: Sculpture 1- An introduction to sculpting techniques and materials. 
Art 3711C: Sculpture: Materials and Methods- Problems in sculptural form and composition. Work in plaster, clay, metal and other materials.  


EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared to work in the studio. Students who leave class to get materials they need for their projects will be counted as "absent." Reading assignments will be handed out the day prior to discussion in class. I will keep track of each student's participation in classroom discussions and critiques as well as attendance. Just showing up is not enough; you must be present in mind as well as body.

House rules:
1) Be on time.
2) No phones, iPods, sleeping, or disruptive behavior.
3) Be responsible; clean up after yourself. This is a community studio.
4) Work safely.

PROJECTS
Students will complete four projects throughout the semester. The projects are designed so that students may gain proficiency working in various sculptural media while furthering their individual creative research. Students enrolled in Sculpture 1 must complete the projects as assigned. Students enrolled in Materials & Methods may propose alternate projects following the same timeline and using the same materials IF they have both previously taken Sculpture 1 AND are already proficient with the tools and methods used in the assignments. Students who meet the above criteria and choose to propose alternate projects must prepare sketches and a project timeline, and meet with the instructor individually during class time to discuss their proposal, which may or may not be accepted. Students enrolled in Materials & Methods who have already taken Sculpture 1 but would like to complete the projects as assigned rather than proposing their own may do so.

GRADING
Your projects will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. DESIGN: the visual and conceptual aspects of the work
• Originality, inventiveness, innovation
• Concept; level of complexity; effectiveness of solutions, creative problem solving
• Appropriate use of chosen materials
• Composition/form
• Marriage of concept and form

2. TECHNIQUE: the physical aspect of the work
• Quality of construction
• Effective use of materials and techniques; mastery and appropriate use of techniques
• Attention to details; finishing touches; purposeful finish

A = Excellent work, mastered technical skills and conceptual ideas
B = Above average, skilful use of materials combined with a good concept
C = Average, competent execution of craftsmanship and ideas with no outstanding qualities.
D = Below average, poor execution of ideas with little or no attention to detail.
F = Work is deficient in all areas.

o Work that is turned in late will receive one full grade lower than is deserved, due to failure to complete assignments on time.
o Throughout the semester, all work can be improved upon using the suggestions given in critiques.
o Critiques are extremely important for everyone in the class. Active participation is essential.

SAFETY INFORMATION
Students in this course will work in the shop using a variety of power and handheld tools, which may cause injury. Students should use the shop only after having received an orientation in the use of such equipment, when supervised by faculty or shop personnel. Other students cannot train you on the use of the machinery. Students or other persons not enrolled in this course will not be allowed to use the equipment. You must wear enclosed shoes at all times when working in the studio, and you must wear leather shoes when using the welding or metal cutting equipment. If coming to class in proper footwear is a problem, bring shoes to keep in the storage area, because you will not be allowed to work without proper footwear. Also, proper eye, hand, ear and face protection must be worn when appropriate.

All aspects of the Miami Dade County College Honor Code Policy will be followed and enforced. All artwork must be original and created in this class during this term.
